about

A humorous story song about my dad. Nothing in this song is fabricated. My dad still says “Take your time going, hurry back”, every time I talk to him. I was inspired by the fantastic songwriter, John Prine who says that if a story song doesn’t have a great ending, it better have a good moral.

lyrics

When I was growing up, my daddy would start his day,
a little bit later in the morning, than a typical farmer way.
He'd linger over coffee, well past the rooster's crow,
tractors in the field and the morning seeds to sow.
He'd wait until the sun so high up in the sky,
was heating up the earth like the fourth of July.
I'd run out the door to catch the bus each day.
He'd send us on our way and these words he'd often say.

He said,"Take your time going, hurry back, smell the roses then get back on track. Doesn't matter who wins the race, enjoy the ride in second place, don't get uptight about who's lost or won, Time don't mean a thing when it's said and done."

Well, folks around would talk about my daddy's ways,
During rounds of cards much later in the day.
They'd whisper as he walked on by, the late night sleepy head,
Heckling as he passed on yelling''Get your ass out of bed".
But my dad would stand real tall as men all turned his way,
He said these words of wisdom as the sun would set each day.

He said,"Take your time going, hurry back, smell the roses then get back on track. Doesn't matter who wins the race, enjoy the ride in second place, don't get uptight about who's lost or won, Time don't mean a thing when it's said and done."

Seasons they come and seasons they go,
Chores have been done and grass has been mowed.
We all have a special way of getting through this life,
Some rush out the door and some stay and kiss their wife.
So why would neighbors care how timely work is done,
The early bird gets the worm when the sleepy bird gets none.
And maybe it's the secret of how the west was won,
Get it done at midnight, before the rising sun?

So..."Take your time going, hurry back, smell the roses then get back on track. Doesn't matter who wins the race, enjoy the ride in second place, don't get uptight about who's lost or won, Time don't mean a thing when it's said and done."
